Hollywood Coverage of the book

THE TRAIL OF A PROMISCUOUS SPOUSE is a rousing, dramatic, and at times comical look at the web of complications that arise from promiscuity, adultery and lies. In many ways, the story is a unique one that touches on dark truths about all relationships, painting a complicated picture of contemporary Zimbabwe. The twists and turns keep building on top of complex and driven characters, and the story crescendos satisfactorily to an unexpected and dramatic climax. THE TRAIL OF A PROMISCUOUS SPOUSE has the potential to be adapted into either a film or TV series, both of which would resonate with audiences throughout the world.

Though theatre and film could both function as good media in which to adapt the novel, a TV series would likely be the best fit. The numerous detailed and layered stories of all of the characters, once appropriately expanded, would easily fill many episodes and seasons that would inevitably keep the audience glued to the screen. As the stories begin to intermingle, the episodic discoveries and conflicts only become more interesting and compelling. A TV series adaptation would maximize the best qualities of the book.

A great starting point for any adaptation of THE TRAIL OF A PROMISCUOUS SPOUSE is the characters, one of the strongest elements of the novel. Each character is driven by conflicting inner desires and emotions. Whereas most stories struggle simply to keep their characters in external conflict, the characters in this story have no difficulty running into problems. Their lives and relationships are predicated on lies, cheating, stealing and sex, and every move they make gets them into more trouble. The characters almost all exhibit unique and memorable qualities, and after all of their poor choices and moral challenges, the audience still empathizes with them. Though this novel reads more as an institutionalized or group-protagonist story, it might benefit from having one clear protagonist. This clarity will help build a compelling emotional arc as well as a narrative structure that will order all of the other subplots.

The concept and story of THE TRAIL OF A PROMISCUOUS SPOUSE are packed to the brim with interesting and unique ideas: all forms of sexual taboos are discovered and exposed, and many relationships – sexual and family – are taken to their extremes. The writer succeeds in creating scenes that visually jump to life and keep the audience in tension. One of those scenes, for instance, is the opening one, where Samantha sneaks into her maid’s room to catch her husband cheating, only to enter into an affair herself. In this regard, there is a great deal to work with for any possible adaptation of the book into a film or TV script. Nonetheless, the plot organization and subplot buildups would benefit from further development. Oftentimes, adapting original material into screen and teleplays requires cutting and rearranging the source material to increase the overall tension and buildup for the viewer. In THE TRAIL OF A PROMISCUOUS SPOUSE, for instance, a great deal of the stories are revealed in conversations and back story. Some of the overlapping stories, to keep the audience from disengaging would have to be rearranged and introduced at different times.

Though some minimal improvement is necessary for an adaptation of this novel, the details and unique point of view of the story contribute to its great potential. This look at the underbelly of relationships and society in contemporary Zimbabwe is quite original and will appeal to many audiences. If adapted, it could be marketed as a new “Desperate Housewives,” garnering attention from A-list actors and directors.

The trail of a promiscuous spouse
By Emmanuel Chinyamakobvu
Titus and his newly wedded young wife Samantha were not on good terms. In fact Samantha was convinced that Tito, as she preferred calling him was having an affair with the pretty housemaid. Samantha had hired Anita to assist with the house chores. Her nursing job at the local hospital was taking all out of her and she felt she needed the help of Anita to give herself more time with her husband as and whenever she was home.
Not knowing what to do, Samantha decided to give her maid a chance for the benefit of the doubt. On the Friday morning of that week Samantha summoned Anita after breakfast for a frank woman-to-woman talk.
“Anita, I am very pleased with your work,” started Samantha, “but I don’t think I am happy with you developing a close friendship with my husband. You are here to help with the housework, in particular the kitchen. Anything to do with my husband and my bedroom has completely nothing to do with you. I look after my husband myself and therefore I do not expect you to do anything in that regard…..
“…… Should I suspect that you are having anything to do with my bedroom and my husband you might as well pack your belongings and leave before I skin you alive. Do I make myself clear?”
“Yes Madam.” Responded the shell shocked Anita.
“Do you have a boyfriend?” asked Samantha.
“No Madam, I don’t,” replied Anita not knowing what to expect next.
“Take this weekend off and come back on Monday next week…. See you on Monday,”ordered Samantha. Anita took a few of her belongings she needed for the weekend and left.
Wanting to set a trap for her husband, Samantha did not inform Tito when he returned home from work that evening that Anita was away for the weekend. Incidentally, that night when they went to bed, Tito had a running stomach. Getting out of bed, he excused himself saying“Excuse me Samantha it must be something that I ate either today or yesterday. My stomach is at it again. It looks like I will have to sleep in the toilet today,” and he disappeared towards the guests bathroom.
As soon as Tito closed the bathroom door, Samantha promptly dashed along the corridor, out at the back, went round the house, on to the verandah and into Anita’s bedroom. She just had the time to switch the lights off when the door quietly opened and closed again. The intruder locked the door behind him and wasted no time. He seemed to know his way in the darkness and he did not say a word. He quickly took off his clothes, joined Samantha under the blankets on the bed and started feeling around her waist and fondling her breasts. Samantha responded, caressing and kissing him passionately.
Momentarily he had taken off all her underwear and got on top of her......Samantha was enjoying every split second of the exploit sharing her forbidden fruit of nature. It was as ravaging an encounter as it was a steaming exploit.
When he had finished and still panting, Samantha said “You didn’t expect to find me in this bed, did you?” and switched on the light.
“No indeed, Madam, I didn’t,” said in a very low voice the young man who lodged next door to the dumbfounded Samantha. “I expected Anita and not you, Madam,”........... “I am very sorry Madam for what has happened. Please do not report me to your husband. It was never my intention.”
Samantha did not say a word…..
“Madam, your husband is a very lucky man,” he said. “You were very good Madam and I hope you were not disappointed with me either.” Noticing the shock in her eyes he added, “Don’t worry Madam your secret is safe with me,” he said zipping his mouth. “But in the event that your husband finds out, as he is bound to do one day, my arms will be wide open for you. One more thing, of course at any time you can have my shoulders to cry on and if anything, I am just next door.”  He blew a kiss in her direction, switched off the light and left as quietly as he had come, closing the door behind him.
………That was the condemned night when the illicit affair between Samantha and Toby had begun many years ago............until that fateful day when Marjorie was taken to hospital ill, in the middle of the night.

PRESS RELEASE

A society and its upstanding social and religious mores are called into question following one man’s discovery of his wife’s infidelity and the terrible drama that follows.

In the small town of Nyanga, on Zimbabwe’s boarder with Mozambique, Titus is devastated to learn that his wife Samantha has been leading a double life, with a secret second husband. To compound his grief, Titus learns that two of the four children he has lovingly raised are not his. As Samantha retreats in shame to her parent’s home, Titus resolves to seek the truth and understand for himself just what went wrong in his marriage. He finds some comfort in the supportive words of a stranger, Nhau, whose own marriage failed due to his wife’s money-grubbing ways.

That afternoon, as the two men are engrossed in discussion, picking over the remains of their family affairs, they are offered sage advice by yet another benevolent stranger, Tongai, a police inspector. Over time, a bond will form between the three men and Tongai will urgently need them to return his favour, and help him with a bloody investigation.

When one of Tongai’s officers is shot dead and two others are brutally attacked, the Detective Chief Inspector is called to uncover the truth behind the assaults. Dangerous love triangles would at first appear to be at the heart of the matter. But as Tongai’s astute investigation develops, he realises that he is working within a society that’s rotten to the core, belegeured by robbery, rape, police corruption, sexual abuse, ritual killings, homelessness and the exploitation of the weak and vulnerable. To break through the cobweb of crimes, Tongai realizes he can only rely on his new allies, Nhau and Titus, to provide the most important clues needed to bring about justice.

Inspired by real life events Thou shall not be caught! is a powerfully moving and deeply insightful exploration of the multifarious nature of a society. Intelligent and commanding, the novel is a must-read, especially for those with an interest in African culture.

The farm on their land
By
Emmanuel Chinyamakobvu
For decades the land question remained a topical issue in Zimbabwe.  Two decades after independence in 1980, discontent was now constantly and increasingly expressed against the Government by the rural population and war veterans who were staging demonstrations demanding the fulfillment of the promises made during the liberation war of taking the land from the mainly white commercial farmers and returning it back to its rightful owners, the black majority.  Inevitably, contradictions in the Zimbabwean society were coming to a head.  For ten years the Lancaster House agreement had barred the Government from unilaterally redistributing the land.

Then at the turn of the twenty first century, came the “Jambanja” era, heralding a landmark in Zimbabwe’s struggle to reclaim its stolen birthright.  It was the beginning of the last but most decisive phase of the straggle, the "Do or Die" stage.  The old order was being replaced by the new order and inevitably some violent skirmishes became part of the “Jambanja”. This was premised on the fact that reclaiming the land from the white minority was a matter of national interest worth fighting for and those who challenged it provoked a fight as what unfortunately often happens in all such situations.

The British Crown and its Western allies were up in arms against the Government of Zimbabwe.  The government was never to be forgiven for daring to take the land from the white minority and giving it back to the people of Svosve.  Sanctions were visited upon the people of Svosve by the British Crown and its allies.  The western sanctions simply implied that their proponents did not care whether or not the black majority exercised their freedom of choice, independence, right to self-determination, right to their land, right to their economic resources and right to becoming masters of their own destiny. To them, so long as the white minority remained on the land justice was being served.  The sanctions broke the will and determination of many a people in those days.

The strategy employed by the advocates of the sanctions was never to publicly lament the seizure of farms belonging to the white minority as that would reveal the hand of the British Crown and its Allies in the scheme of things.  But for the people of Svosve, regaining the ownership of their land was of historic national importance as it went to define conditions for peace or no peace and violence or no violence in the country. They decreed the constants, the non-negotiable and the fixed position of vital national interest that the Second Chimurenga had already subscribed to. In this regard, anyone working against that national interest was an enemy of the nation.

Will history deservedly, condemn or honour for all times the people of Svosve who opened the first battle front for the Third Chimurenga and soldiered on to the bitterest end regardless of the obvious hazards and tribulations that lay ahead?  If opening the battle front was a mare beginning, were the people of Svosve capable of undertaking the most difficult work that was yet to come, the rebuilding of the nation’s agricultural based economy?  Were the land reform beneficiaries able to confound all predictions and accomplish what was deemed impossible?  The people of Svosve had no doubt aroused hopes in the eyes of the disposed majority, but were the consequences worth the trouble?
